Real Zari vs Imitation Zari
Zari contributes heavily to the appearance of many traditional sarees.
However, a golden appearance does not automatically tell you what the zari is made from.
What Is Zari?
Zari is metallic thread used in saree borders, pallus and motifs.
Its composition and manufacturing method can vary.
Why the Distinction Matters
Different zari types influence:
- Appearance-Weight
- Durability-Price
- Care requirements
What Should You Ask?
When buying an expensive saree, ask the seller to specify:
- Zari composition-Whether the zari is tested or certified-Whether it is metallic-coated thread-Whether the product documentation specifies the zari type
Important Certification Difference
Silk Mark is focused on pure silk fibre. The Silk Mark Organisation specifically states that Silk Mark does not assure zari purity or quality.
Therefore, do not interpret a Silk Mark label as certification of the saree's zari.
Online Buying Tip
Look for detailed close-up photographs and a transparent product description.
For premium sarees, the seller should clearly explain what you are purchasing.
